Back to School: Why you Should Book your Child’s Eye Test

Back to school is always a time of turmoil – our children are sad to lose their freedom, happy to see their friends, and we are happy to see an end to the constant need to find entertaining activities for them! You likely have a long list of tasks you need to do to get them ready to go back to school, and one thing you should be sure not to miss is their back-to-school eye test.

Why does my child need an eye test before they start school?

Children have a unique view of the world, and they often don’t know that they’re perceiving something incorrectly until they’re told. They may see perfectly well to run around during the summer holidays, play video games, and browse online, but they may struggle to read when they return to school and are required to read books and textbooks.

If a sight issue goes unnoticed, your child may be perceived to have developmental difficulties where there are none, simply because they can’t see well enough to process written information quickly. They may be too shy or embarrassed to speak up and say that they are too far away from the board to properly see what’s being taught. The best thing you can do to ensure they’re in the best position to learn is to ensure they can see correctly. We also offer a range of prescription sunglasses; you can find out why you should wear them all year round below!

Are children’s eye tests in Birmingham free?

Yes – the NHS covers all eye tests for children under 16, and up to 19 if they are still in full-time education. That means that getting your child’s eyes tested ready to go back to school (or start for the first time) doesn’t need to be expensive.

Can my child have an eye test if they’re too young to read?

Yes, we have ways to test your child’s vision long before they know how to identify the letters of the alphabet. Better still, Kings Opticians make children’s eye tests in Birmingham fun and interactive, so you don’t need to worry about how you’re going to keep them still enough to be accurately assessed.

What do children’s glasses cost?

If your child is found to have some sight issues, you don’t need to panic. We offer a wide range of colourful frames and fun designs at affordable prices, so you don’t need to worry about them going off to school with a pair you’d struggle to replace if they broke or lost them. Many glasses are also free with an NHS voucher, so your child will always have every opportunity to learn optimally. You can find out more about children’s eye testing below.
